SIGGRAPH/ACM Boston Meeting

Northeastern University, Boston
Raf Anzovin
Anzovin Studio

See also http://chapters.siggraph.org/boston for this announcement plus directions.

In this presentation, Anzovin Studio president Raf Anzovin will talk about Anzovin Studio’s work and how they’ve survived as a small boutique studio in waters patrolled by much bigger fish. He will present a case study of their recent work on the intro cinematic for the railroad simulation game Sid Meier’s Railroads and the CG and compositing techniques used in its production.

Anzovin Studio is a full-service animation studio situated in Amherst, Massachusetts. Despite being located in the Pioneer Valley, far from the centers of film and game production, Anzovin Studio has survived, and had the chance to work on many high-profile projects, including Halo 2, the DaVinci Code game, and Hasbro’s recent made-for-DVD GI-Joe movies. They’ve also made a name for themselves with their automated rigging solution, The Setup Machine.

  1. Paul Freedman Says:

    Folks -

I’m a Flash developer who’s been interested in animation since the dawn of time. But that’s not the point. My stepson, who’s 17, is completely absorbed by games and is beginning to explore the field with hopes of working in it one day. He and I were looking to attend next Tuesday’s meeting. Tonight, I noticed mention of the SIGGRAPH meeting the next night. We have to pick one. Can you help us choose between them?

    Thanks,
    Paul Freedman

  2. Kent Says:

SIGGRAPH is about making graphics. Post Mortem is about making games. SIGGRAPH will probably be more meeting-like (fair warning — I’ve never attended one), PM is more of a mixer. Anzovin Studios almost always has someone at PM.

Someone interested in the games industry is more likely to find the people at PM relevant. In this case, the talks will probably both be interesting, but PM will have the more appropriate crowd. If you have to pick only one, I’d pick Post Mortem.

  3. Paul Freedman Says:

Thanks, Kent. It looks like it’s PM for us. But: are there two meetings in Waltham, one on Ttuesday and another on Wednesday? And, if so, how does one choose between them? And, now that this choice has presented itself, should we expect another option to appear sometime tomorrow?

Googling “MMP” evokes a wonderful kaleidoscope, by the way. Is the Wednesday subject really “MultiMan Publishing”?

  4. Kent Says:

Woof. Sorry for the confusion — I got the date wrong (and have now fixed it — it’s Tuesday).

MMP stands for “Massively Multi-Player” — which has become easier/shorter to say that MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game), which is the standard but unfortunate acronym by which these games have become known.
