On Monday, December 4th at 7:00pm, Lee Spector will be presenting to Grey Thumb on his research at Hampshire College.
From his abstract:
“In this talk I will present recent results, produced in collaborative work with Jon Klein, on the evolution of cooperation in populations of virtual agents. Some of the examples will involve populations of simple agents playing abstract games, while others will involve physically simulated agents interacting with one another in three-dimensional virtual worlds. We will look at the influence of several system parameters on the evolution of cooperation, including changes to genetic stability, territorial structure, individual-recognition mechanisms, and sharing protocols. I will situate these results within a more speculative discussion of ways in which cooperation, or mechanisms that permit cooperation, may contribute to the evolution of adaptive complexity.”
Grey Thumb is a group of scientists, engineers, hackers, artists, and hobbyists in the Boston metro area with a strong interest in artificial life, artificial intelligence, biology, complex systems, and other related topics. Grey Thumb is inspired by the Homebrew Computer Club and Make magazine, but geared in the direction of artificial life. One of our goals is to bring together the academics and the hobbyists, the curious and the scholarly, and anyone else who is interested in artificial life. We get together on the first Monday of every month at Christopher’s Pub in Porter Square in Cambridge, MA, to do a blend of socializing, coding and listening to lectures on ALife related subjects.
Lee Spector is a Professor of Computer Science in the School of Cognitive Science at Hampshire College. He received a B.A. in Philosophy from Oberlin College in 1984, and a Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland in 1992. At Hampshire he has held the MacArthur Chair, served as the elected faculty member of the Board of Trustees, and served as the Dean of the School of Cognitive Science. He supervises the Hampshire College Cluster Computing Facility.
Christopher’s is located at 1920 Massachusetts Ave, in Cambridge, almost directly across from the Porter Square T Stop on the Red Line.
All are welcome.
